Serving Others

Today we looked at Phillipians 2:5 - 11.

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

We talked about how this verse was saying that Jesus came down to earth, even though he was a heavenly being, and humbled himself in order to die for us. He died on the cross, which at the time this was written, was the worst and most shameful way to die (a criminals death) and people would have been throwing things at him and calling him names. This passage calls us to be like Jesus and serve others, which he did on earth before he died.

We also looked at James 1:27.

Anyone who sets himself up as "religious" by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.

We decided that this means that the people who we need to serve are those who need our help such as people who may not have much money, homeless people, care for people who are having a bad day or get picked on by others, helping out at home if your parents are very busy. It all is very simple and easy to do. Just being kind to one another also is serving.

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day. And there is a Random acts of kindness website that has a lot of inspiring ways to be kind to others!

  1. Hey, thanks Jess for reminding us of the Jesus way to live. I wondered if there were any stories from the bloggers following on from your discussions - who's been kind to who?? It would be great to hear!
